Was it really a surprise when Christopher Plummer scored an Oscar for Beginners?

Canadians have been placing their bets on the iconic Canuck actor for ages. His 60-year career has included countless roles in everything from The Sound of Music to Syriana (We're choosing to overlook The Lake House). And Plummer's wins at the Golden Globes, Indie Spirit Awards and SAG Awards earlier this year locked him in early as the clear favourite to win an Oscar.

No offence to the other nominees. We love you too, but maybe you could learn a thing or two -- or 13 -- from Plummer's career, so flip through the gallery below.

Much to his chagrin, Christopher Plummer is still most remembered for his role as Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music. Plummer was not impressed with the one-dimensional character he played and tried -- to no avail -- to make von Trapp more interesting. At least Julie Andrews was there to cheer him up, right? He once said working with her was like "getting hit over the head with a Valentine."

He was right about Lake House ... even though I lived in Chicago at the time and some of the pieces I could follow, the whole movie was "Do you want to take your lunch or the bus?"
