Why Tom Cruise Doesn't Work As Jack Reacher

Posted: 12/27/2012 1:45 pm

When word first leaked that Tom Cruise would be bringing Jack Reacher to life on the big screen in Jack Reacher, fans of the Lee Child book series were none too pleased. After all, the literary version of Reacher is a hulking mass of a man, a muscle-bound 6'5".

Cruise, on the other hand, is a slight 5'8". Sure, he's obviously been hitting the gym and bulking up his frame lately (as evidenced in his shirtless Rock of Ages scenes), but even still, he's hardly an imposing figure.

He is, however, a great action star. He's among an elite group of actors who are able to master dramatic moments, witty quips and epic chase scenes -- all key components to pulling off well-rounded action flicks that require more thought than, say, The Expendables. (In case you're wondering, I would also place the likes of Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe in this category.)

That may be why the idea of Cruise embodying Reacher seems to have slowly grown on people. Unfortunately, in spite of Cruise's best efforts, the movie falls flat. In fact, this is probably Cruise's biggest misfire since the 2010 embarrassment Knight & Day, in which he starred opposite Cameron Diaz. Jack Reacher's failings certainly can't be blamed entirely on Cruise, or any of the other actors, for that matter. His high caliber co-stars Rosamund Pike (Pride & Prejudice), Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), David Oyelow (Lincoln) and legendary director Werner Herzog all deliver solid performances.

The problem is with the script. The movie plays out as a bad episode of a mediocre procedural crime show. It's not particularly suspenseful, its lead characters aren't relatable, and at 2 hours and 10 minutes, it clocks in about 20 minutes longer than it needs to be.

It's a shame, too. Reacher held a lot of promise. It has a great cast, it's based on a fascinating character, and it has a talented writer/director at the helm in the form of Christopher McQuarrie. Sadly, instead of becoming his next The Way of the Gun, Reacher has more in common with the notorious 2010 flop he co-wrote, The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.

The most glaring misstep (in my view, anyway), is that the screenplay failed to tailor the character to reflect Cruise's considerably less imposing stature. Case in point (without giving anything away): in one scene, the police ask a motel worker if any of the guests look like they could have killed someone with a single punch. The motel worker instantly directs them to Cruise's Reacher.

Seriously? When I think of someone who could kill a person with a single punch, Cruise isn't exactly the first person who springs to mind. The Reacher of the book, sure. That hulking beast of a man could probably kill two people with a single punch! Cruise, not so much.

That's not to say Cruise can't be intimidating. He can. It's usually his speed and wit that make him a formidable action star, though. If the Reacher script was properly tailored to showcase more of Cruise's trademark zingers and running prowess, it may have fared a lot better.

Cruise has been busy filming non-stop over the past couple of years, which means we'll be seeing a lot more of him in the near future. Let's hope Oblivion, the sci-fi action adventure blockbuster that's up next, does a better job of maximizing Cruise's many talents. After all, he's got the skills. He just needs to pick the right projects.

You can't make a great movie from a truly terrible book, even if the star is the right size for the character. The Reacher books are utter dreck.

Jack Reacher is imposing and intimidating without ever opening his mouth. THAT is why Tom Cruise will never be acceptable in the character. It matters not what amusing or intimidating repartee emanates from Cruise. No one believes it who has ever read one of the books. It is also why I will never see any movie starring Cruise as Reacher.

Movie backers can probably expect that with Cruise onboard the film will at least break even, but that's not saying much. Publicity related to his marriage break-ups and association to Scientology haven't helped his image. At age 50 and of small stature application of "great action star" is beginning to be quite a stretch.

If Tom Cruise wants to put those gay rumors to rest... he shouldn't play a character called "Jack Reacher"...
10:35 PM on 12/28/2012
Where does the writer get Cruise is 5'8"? Most sites list him as 5'5" and that is generous. My friend was introduced to him in TX. She is 5'3" and she said that he was almost exactly her height. Reacher's size makes Reacher "Reacher". That is definitely not Cruise. The only way to make that movie work would be to hire midgets and build minature sets.

I'm 5'9", and Tom Cruise's head didn't clear my shoulders when we stood next to each other at a show in the 90's. He and his wife Mimi were wee little things, pocket stars.

Crusie is a Hollywood 5'8" (which is more like 5'6" at best). Note how much shorter he is than his past wives who are actually around 5'8"-5'9". Combine his Lilliputian stature with his squeaky voice, and you almost couldn't have chosen a worse actor for the role of Reacher. Jackman or Crowe on the other hand ... you might have had a decent chance with.

I am a long time Lee Child reader (so is my 20+ son) and we were both completely floored at the casting of Tom Cruise for Jack Reacher as well. So many other, better choices could have been made. What was this Director thinking???

Lee Child already discussed this: there's no actor with name recognition who fits the book's description of Reacher.  Similar problems were encountered when casting the Kingpin for Daredevil.

Considering he started writing the Reacher books as a means to support himself after getting laid off from his TV producer job back in England, why are you surprised?

You keep approaching this from the fanboy perspective of how the fanboys are the only people who matter in this, and that both money and the laws of physics are no object.  Non-fans have to want to see the movie, too, and that means casting someone they'd recognize f

But as far as Tom knows, he is a hulking muscle man and 6'5". At least that's what is agent, assistant, and publicist tell him. Oh, and he's from Zenu.

While reading this, i was trying to think of an actor who could pull it off, and for the life of me, i can not think of a "real" actor of stature, sure there are ex athletes that act, but i don't consider them actors. The tallest "real' actor would be Tim Robbins, but he's as intimidating as Cruise.

As a HUGE fan of Lee Child's books about Reacher, I thought that mixed martial arts dude.... the one on DWTS ... maybe Chuck Lidell. Or... never mentioned Reacher's race (his mom was french) so a younger Dwayne Johnson (The Rock). Someone like that.

Lee Child basically said in an interview (paraphrasing here) that he created Reacher not really thinking of who might play him. He just created a character.
